5 Key Security Principles

1. Make sure you have the latest security updates & patches

From time to time vulnerabilities are discovered in programs running on your PC which, left uncorrected could be exploited by virus writers and hackers to gain unauthorised access. The program publisher will normally release a "patch" to correct any weakness.

To check for patches and updates you should visit the publisher's website, typically in their 'Download' section.

Microsoft users can visit: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com which can automatically check what is required for both operating system and browser and then download it at your request.

2. Install anti-virus software

Anti-virus software is designed to detect known viruses and help prevent them from infecting your PC. New viruses can spread very quickly, so you should ensure that your anti-virus software is always running and is updated on a regular basis - we would recommend setting your update service to automatically accept updates from the supplier. Well known anti-virus protection brands are McAfee, Symantec (Norton) and Sophos. Anti-Virus software is available from most PC Stores or to download from the Internet.

3. Install anti-spyware software

We recommend that you install anti-spyware software which can help prevent someone else obtaining your personal and/or security details whilst you are using your PC. Well known suppliers of this software include Symantec (Norton) and Computer Associates.

4. Use a personal firewall

A personal firewall is a small program that helps protect your PC and its contents from unauthorised access on the Internet. When installed correctly, it stops unauthorised traffic to and from your PC. There are many effective programs to choose from examples include Zone Labs, McAfee and Computer Associates. Windows XP SP2 does provide a 'free' personal firwall which is perfectly adequate for starters.

5. Password advice:

Passwords are a crucial piece of information which are used to identify that an individual is actually who they claim to be. By their very nature, they must be kept secret at all times. Just think of them as the online equivalent of your bank/cash card's PIN.

  • Never write your security details down.
  • Don't use the same password for different services.
  • Never use passwords that are easy to associate with you ie family names, birthdays etc.
  • Never disclose your security details to anyone.
